We are in the process of preserving USFL video. More than three-and-a-half decades have passed since the USFL last played football, and video of its games is in more danger every day of being lost or destroyed. Tampa Bay 24 at Portland 27

1985 Week 16 - Saturday, June 8, 1985
Tampa Bay Bandits(9-6)(-10) at Portland Breakers(4-11)
Attendance: 15,521

PORTLAND (AP) - Matt Robinson threw for two touchdowns Saturday to lead the Portland Breakers to a 27-24 United States Football League victory over the Tampa Bay Bandits.

Portland running beck Buford Jordan added two touchdown runs, each of five yards. Tampa, which could have clinched a playoff berth with a victory, fell to a season record of 9-7. Portland improved to 5-11.

Robinson threw touchdown passes of 24 and 39 yards to wide receiver Nolan Franz In the first quarter. One or Tim Mazzetti's extra point attempts was blocked but Tampa never overcame Portland's 13-point lead.

Portland Coach Dick Coury was happy with the way his defense held in the second half although the Bandits scored three touchdowns.

"Our defense came through when they had to," Coury said. "I've said all along that I've never doubted the attitude of these players. You've seen them in practice, they work real hard and the coaches work real hard."

Defensive end Frankie Wilson, playing his first game for the Breakers, intercepted a Bandit pass on Portland's 9-yard line with six minutes remaining in the game.

Wilson returned the interceptIon 68 yards to the Tampa Bay 28 in the 4th quarter.

"Our new guy Wilson did a real good job with that interception and return," Coury said.

"They're a good football team. I just thank God we had more points on the board at the end of the game."

Tampa Bay Coach Steve Spurrier was upset by the Bandits turnovers.

"We just didn't play very sharp. We had a lot of chances but we even gave them one touchdown," Spurrier said.

"I don't know what happened, we just got beat."
