Attendance: 29,129, TV: ABC
DENVER(AP) - Bill Johnson ran for three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with six minutes remaining Sunday, to lead the Denver Gold over the New Jersey Generals 28-24.
Johnson ran for 98 yards, giving him 1,063 this season. He is the USFL's second-leading rusher.
The league's leading runner, Herschel Walker, gained 142 yards. Walker, who was almost 500 yards ahead of Johnson entering the game, cracked the 100-yard mark for the seventh straight time.
Johnson smashed over from the 1 to cap a 13-play, 80-yard drive that put the Gold ahead for good. Walker had put the 8-5 Generals in front with a one-yard dive earlier in the fourth quarter.
The Gold, 9-4, did a good job of containing New Jersey quarterback Doug Flutie after the Generals' first play of the game. Flutie connected with Walker on a 68-yard TD pass to open the game.
