HOUSTON(AP) -- Houston's Jim Kelly threw two touchdown passes and engineered the Gamblers to Sam Harrell's game-winning 1-yard touchdown dive with 54 seconds to play en route to a 27-20 victory over the Portland Breakers.
Clarence Verdin started the game-winning drive with a 45-yard kickoff return and after Kelly kept for two yards and a first down, Harrell scored. The touchdown quelled a comeback by the Breakers, who rallied from a 20-6 fourth-quarter deficit to tie it 20-20 with 3:38 to play.
The Gamblers, 5-0, started sluggishly but led 13-3 at the half on a 50-yard Kelly to Vince Courville pass and field goals of 25 and 42 yards by Toni Fritsch.
