We are in the process of preserving USFL video. More than three-and-a-half decades have passed since the USFL last played football, and video of its games is in more danger every day of being lost or destroyed. Denver 17 at Houston 36

1985 Week 4 - Monday, March 18, 1985
Denver Gold(2-1) at Houston Gamblers(3-0)(-14)
Attendance: 33,747, TV: ESPN

HOUSTON (AP) - Denver Gold Coach Mouse Davis finally got a chance to look into the teeth of the run-and-shoot monster he created with the Houston Gamblers a year ago. And it bit him.

The Gamblers, paced by four touchdown passes from quarterback Jim Kelly and three field goals by Toni Fritsch, blasted Davis' Gold 36-17 Monday night in a United States Football League game with the offense Davis created last season as the Gamblers' offensive coordinator.

"Mouse is just like any other coach we play against but it was sure good to beat him," Kelly said after completing 32 of 61 passes for 433 yards. "After the game he (Davis) said he couldn't believe how much punishment I could take, but he said he knew that I was a hard-nosed player."

The Gamblers fell behind 17-13 in the third quarter before Kelly and the Gamblers rallied to their fourth straight victory. The Gold dropped to 2-2. "We did what we've been doing all year, keeping our poise and fighting back," Kelly said.
