WASHINGTON (AP) - Quarterback Rick Neuheisel's two touchdowns and three Nick Mike-Mayer field goals powered the San Antonio Gunslingers to a 30-14 United States Football League victory over the Washington Federals Sunday.
Neuheisel, enjoying his best day since throwing four touchdowns for UCLA in the Rose Bowl in January, threw scoring strikes of 4 yards to Joey Hackett and 5 yards to Mark Rush as the Gunslingers opened a 17-7 lead at the half. Rush also ran for a touchdown and Nick Mike-Mayer added field goals of 37, 26 and 31 yards as San Antonio upped their record to 5-8. The loss dropped the Federals to 2-11.
San Antonio opened the scoring in the first quarter on Neuheisel's 4-yard touchdown pass to Hackett.
The Federals, held without a first down in the opening period, went 80 yards the first time they touched the ball in the second quarter. Quarterback Mike Hohensee, beating a San Antonio blitz, hooked up with Joey Walters on a 25-yard scoring strike and a 7-7 tie two minutes into the period. The touchdown was Hohensee's ninth TD pass of the season and Walters eighth, both club records.
