Philadelphia Stars(12-2)(-7) at New Jersey Generals(4-10)
Attendance: 32,521

E.Rutherford,NJ(AP) - The Philadelphia Stars became the first team to qualify for the United States Football League playoffs Sunday, clinching the Atlantic Division title by beating the New Jersey Generals 23-9 as David Trout booted three field goals and Kelvin Bryant scored one touchdown and set up another.

Philadelphia, which two weeks ago narrowly missed clinching a spot in the playoffs which begin July 9 when it lost in the last seconds to Boston, ran its record to 13-2 by rallying from an early 9-0 deficit.

A crowd of 32,521 who showed up at Giants Stadium in 89-degree weather saw the Stars score on five straight possessions in the second and third quarters.

Trout kicked field goals of 25, 39 and 49 yards, the first with two seconds left in the first half to give Philadelphia a 10-9 lead. Bryant, the league's second leading rusher, was held to a season-low 24 yards in 11 carries.
