MEMPHIS, TN (UPI) - Bobby Hebert connected with Anthony Carter for two touchdowns Saturday to lead a second-half rally that gave the Oakland Invaders a 28-19 victory over the Memph is Showboats and a trip to the USFL championship.
The Invaders will face the winner of Sunday's game between Baltimore and Birmingham for the league championship July 14, at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Oakland trailed 13-7 early in the third quarter before breaking the game open with three straight touchdowns. Hebert hit Carter with touchdown passes of 24 and 19 yards in the third period, then scored on a 1-yard run to put the Invaders ahead 28-13 with 5:55 left in the game.
Memphis' Anthony Parker scored his second touchdown with 27-yard run with 4:19 left to close the lead to 28-19. Showboats quarterback Mike Kelley found Derrick Crawford in the end zone for an apparent two-point conversion, but the play was nullified when Memphis was called for holding.
Hebert connected on 18-of-33 for 287 yards and Carter caught nine passes for 154 yards. Williams rushed for 70 yards to lead Oakland. Parker gained 68 yards for Memphis while Kelley was good on 13-of-25 attempts for 163 yards.
Oakland opened the scoring in the second period on a 7-yard run by John Williams. The Showboats took a 10-7 halftime lead when Alan Duncan kicked a 34-yard field goal and Parker scored on a 23-yard run.
