DENVER(AP) - You aren't supposed to win football games with such offensive futility. In the second and third quarters, the Denver Gold had five straight drives that reached the Houston 4, 2, 9, 13 and 25-yard lines. From those five scoring opportunities, the Gold extracted zero points.
Jim Asmus missed a pair of chip-shot field goals, and Gold quarterback Bob Gagliano was intercepted three times in the end zone.
Asmus, atoning for two earlier missed field-goal attempts, kicked an 18-yarder with one second remaining, lifting the Gold to a 16-13 United States Football League victory over the Houston Gamblers.
The victory enabled the Gold to clinch a playoff berth.
