SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Hours after losing their head coach, the San Antonio Gunslingers succumbed to a last-half Oakland rally that put the Invaders on top 24-21 in United States Football League action Saturday night.

Gunslingers Coach Jim Bates resigned his post Saturday afternoon for "personal reasons," leaving former head coach Gil Steinke to fill in for him during the game.

Invaders relief quarterback Fred Besana tossed a three-yard scoring pass to Mike Shumann with less than three minutes left to rally his team to its victory over the hapless Gunslingers.

"My reasons for leaving are personal," Bates, who assumed the head coaching position this season, said in a statement. "I wish the Gunsllnger organization all the best of luck."

Former head coach Gil Steinke, who was promoted to the team's director of football operations after last season, was to coach the United States Football League team Saturday night, according to team spokesman Greg Singleton.

Besana replaced starting quarterback Bobby Hebert with about 10 minutes left in the game and directed the Invaders on an 11-play, 43-yard scoring drive, including a key 19-yard pass to wide receiver Anthony Carter.

Oakland's Western Divisionleading record jumped to 9-3-1 with the victory, while San Antonio dropped to 3-10.

San Antonio quarterback Rick Neuheisel threw two touchdown passes and ran for one to keep the Gunslingers out in front for most of the game.
