SAN ANTONIO(Daily Herald) - Jim Kelly threw 4 touchdown passes, two each to Gerald McNeil and Richard Johnson, to lead the Houston Gamblers to a 38-29 victory over the San Antonio Gunslingers Sunday.
Kelly, the leader of the USFL's most prolific passing offense, picked the league's second-best pass defense apart, completing 29 of 40 passes for 282 yards.
Houston also received a record breaking performance from Clarence Verdin, who returned a second-quarter kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown. The league record return, which bested a 97-yard effort by Derrick Crawford of the Memphis Showboats last year, was Verdin's third for a touchdown this year.
Houston opened the game's scoring with a 48-yard field goal by Toni Fritsch in the first quarter.
