SAN ANTONIO(AP) - Nick Mike-Mayer kicked three field goals to pace the San Antonio Gunslingers to a 15-14 victory over the Birmingham Stallions Sunday in a United States Football League game.

Mike-Mayer's game-winning 24-yard field goal came with about 11 minutes to go in the game and was scored after a fumble recovery by defensive end Greg Fields.

San Antonio's only touchdown was scored on the last play of the third quarter by its defense when linebacker Putt Choate recovered a fumble interception return and scored from two yards.

Birmingham, 5-2, missed an opportunity to win the game with less than a minute to go when kicker Danny Miller's 37-yard field goal attempt was no good.

Birmingham had marched 64 yards to the San Antonio 20 before Miller's attempt. Reserve quarterback Bob Lane had directed the drive, including two key passes to wide receiver Jim Smith.

Birmingham jumped to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter when safety Chuck Clanton returned an intercepted pass 49 yards for a touchdown. San Antonio had cut the lead to 7-6 at halftime after two Mike-Mayer field goals, Including a 36-yard field goal on the last play of the first half.

Mike-Mayer scored his first field goal on the first play of the second quarter.

Cliff Stoudt scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak early in the third quarter to give the Stallions a 14-6 lead.

Birmingham running back Joe Cribbs gained 71 yards in 20 carries and had five catches for 37 yards to lead the Stallions.
