TEMPE, AZ (AP) - Tim Spencer and Kevin Long each scored twice from the one-yard line and Greg Landry threw two touchdown passes as the Arizona Wranglers bombed the Jacksonville Bulls 45-14 Friday night in a United States Football League game.
Stringing consecutive victories together for the first time this season, the Wranglers evened their record at 8-8 -- the first time they have reached .500 since they were 4-4. Jacksonville, losing its sixth straight game and fourth in a row on the road, fell to 4-12 before a crowd of only 15,513 at 70,021-seat Sun Devil Stadium.
Arizona tied a club record with 21 first period points and set a franchise mark for points in the first half en route to a commanding 38-7 halftime lead.
Long's first one-yard run capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive 7:42 into the game and he added another touchdown dive 5:08 later to finish a 54-yard drive.
After Wrangler safety Luther Bradley's 13-yard interception return to the Jacksonville 49, Landry hit Lenny Willis on a 40-yard scoring strike off a flea-flicker play for a 21-0 bulge with 17 seconds left in the first period.
Frank Corral kicked a 37-yard field goal 4:28 into the second quarter before Arizona defensive end John Lee recovered a fumble by Bulls quarterback Matt Robinson at the Jacksonville 14. Three plays later, Spencer dove over from the one with 7:30 remaining in the half.
Frank Minnifield's interception then set up Landry's 15-yard touchdown pass to Trumaine Johnson for a 38-0 lead with four minutes left.
The expansion Bulls avoided a shutout 48 seconds before halftime when Donald Dykes blocked Corral's punt and Vaughan Johnson recovered the ball in the Arizona end zone.
Spencer made it 45-7 on another one-yard dive with 3:09 to go in the third quarter.
Rookie Ben Bennett, making his USFL debut for Jacksonville, fired a seven-yard touchdown pass to Alton Alexis with 32 seconds remaining in the game.
Landry completed eight of 12 passes for 185yards -- giving him 3,032 yards and 21 touchdowns through 16 games. Both totals are career highs for the 16-year pro.
Spencer had 61 yards on 13 carries as he broke the 1,000-yard barrier for the second straight season.He now has 1,049.
Robinson hit on three of nine attempts for 26 yards with one interception while backup Robbie Mahfouz was 8-of-12 for 58 yards and one pass picked off. Bennett played the final 14:45 for the Bulls and completed seven of 10 passes for 113 yards.
