Michigan 16 at Washington 22 OT
1983 Week 4 - Sunday, March 27, 1983
Michigan Panthers(1-2) at Washington Federals(0-3)(-1)
Attendance: 11,404
WASHINGTON (AP) - Kim McQuilken's third touchdown pass and second to Joey Walters, a 23-yarder 2:43 into overtime, gave Washington a 22-16 triumph over the Michigan Panthers Sunday, the Federals' first victory of the United States Football League season.
The victory came before 11,243 rain-soaked fans at RFK Stadium, less than one-third the 38,010 who attended their season opener. There were 10,396 no-shows Sunday.
The winning drive covered 72 yards in six plays. Walters carried the touchdown reception into the end zone untouched after beating the coverage on a down-and-in pass pattern. Novo Bojovic's 43-yard field goal for Michigan, 1-3, had tied it 16-16 as regulation time expired.
Washington opened the scoring with a 32-yard field goal by Obed Ariri 3:06 into the first quarter and made it 10-0 when McQuilken hit Mike Holmes on a 40-yard touchdown strike with 7:57 remaining in the half.
The Panthers then drove 81 yards in 12 plays, the last a 33-yard Bobby Hebert touchdown pass to Anthony Carter, his first scoring catch as a pro.
The Federals increased their lead to 16-7 on an 8-yard pass from McQuilken to Walters with one second remaining in the half. Ariri missed the conversion. A 69-yard pass from Hebert to Derek Holloway pulled the Panthers within 16-13 with 2:06 remaining in the third quarter, but Bojovic missed the extra point.
