Pittsburgh 3 at Oklahoma 7

1984 Week 1 - Sunday, February 26, 1984
Attendance: 15,937

Doug Williams finds Derek Hughes for all the Outlaws need in their opener.

TULSA (AP) - Mike Rozier, the second straight Heisman Trophy winner signed by the USFL, slipped and stumbled in a freezing rain to only 27 yards in 18 carries, as his Pittsburgh Maulers dropped a 7-3 decision to the Oklahoma Outlaws in a battle of two of the expansion teams who debuted Sunday.

"I think I ran pretty good, the line blocked well for me," said Rozier, recipient of a $3.1 million, 3-year contract. "You can't say it was the weather because that's the way football is. It was a factor, but it always is."

Doug Williams, who joined the expansion Outlaws from the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, engineered the game's only touchdown drive, 80 yards in 8 plays early in the fourth quarter, capped by his 12-yard pass to Derek Hughes.

Pittsburgh's only points came on a 32-yard field goal by Mickey Barrilla.
