Oakland 7 at Denver 20
1984 Week 18 - Friday, June 22, 1984
Oakland Invaders(7-10) at Denver Gold(8-9)(-3)
Attendance: 32,623, TV: KICV
DENVER (AP) -- After the last last nine games, when they compiled an embarrassing 1-8 record, no one realistically expected the Denver gold to finish the season on a high note.
But then no one expected Harry Sydney to rush for 117 yards or Craig Penrose to come off the beach with a competent performance or the defense to get a shutout until the final two minutes.
A Denver Gold team that looked dead in the water as far as the playoffs were concerned kept its faint hopes alive, with Friday night's 20-7 United States Football League triumph over the Oakland Invaders.
Denver finished the regular season at 9-9. If Arizona loses to Pacific Division champion Los Angeles tonight, Denver gains the fourth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference. An Arizona victory gives the playoff spot to the Wranglers.
"We'll just have to wait and see how the other game comes out, and start preparing Sunday if we have to," said Denver Coach Craig Morton. "But I'm real happy tonight. It was a great way to finish the regular season. We proved a lot."
