OAKLAND, CA (AP) - Tom Newton ran around left end for a 20 yard touchdown with 4 50 remaining to break a 13-13 tie and lead the Oakland Invaders 20-13 over the Michigan Panthers Saturday in a United States Football League game.
The Invaders, who won their seventh consecutive game, led throughout the game until Michigan tied it on a spectacular touchdown pass from Whit Taylor to Derek Holloway on the Panthers first play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter.
The Invaders led 7-6 at halftime and added to their margin when quarterback Fred Besana ran a bootleg around left end for a 7 yard touchdown run with 4:17 to play in the third quarter.
Kicker Kevin Shea, who missed three field goals, including a 22-yarder, missed the extra point as Oakland's lead remained at 13-6.
