BIRMINGHAM, AL (AP) - Earl Gant, filling in for Joe Cnbbs. the United States Football League's top rusher, scored twice and threw the key block against two defenders on another touchdown as the Birmingham Stallions defeated the Jacksonville Bulls 42-10 Friday night.

Gant ran it in both times from the 4-yard line as the Stailions, playing before 29,500 fans, increased their record to 10-2, best in the Southern Division The Bulls are 4-8.

Cliff Stoudt hit Ken Toler on a 55-yard scoring pass on Birminghamls first possession. Gant cleared out two Bulls defenders to allow Toler to score.

Gant started after Cnbbs, who led the Stallions in rushing in Birmingham's first 11 games, became embroiled in a contract dispute with the Stallions earlier this week.

Stoudt connected on 14 of 22 passes and scored on a touchdown run. Jacksonville's Matt Robinson completed 18 of 54 passes, but suffered two interceptions including one that David Evans returned 55 yards for a score.

The Bulls got a 45-yard scoring run from Larry Mason and a 22-yard field goal from Brian Franco, both after the Stallions had the game under control.
