CHICAGO (AP) - Safety Don Schwartz returned a third-quarter interception 45 yards for one touchdown and teammate Eddie Brown ran 29 yards with another yesterday as the Chicago Blitz beat the Oakland Invaders 31-7 and into the United States Football League playoffs.
The win improved Chicago's season mark to 12-6 and earned the Blitz the wild card spot against Atlantic Division champion Philadelphia. A crowd of only 12,346 - 6,463 below the average home attendance watched in 80-degree weather while the players suffered field temperatures reported as high as 116 on the artificial playing surface.
Chicago's top-rated defense held the Pacific Division champion Invaders to less than 180 net yards, yielding only 6 in the third quarter.
Chicago got on the board on its opening drive as Tim Spencer scored from the four-yard line just two minutes into the game.
