Denver 7 at New Jersey 27

1984 Week 17 - Saturday, June 16, 1984
Denver Gold(8-8) at New Jersey Generals(12-4)(-7.5)
Attendance: 28,915, TV: WPIX

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.(AP) -- Brian Sipe threw three touchdown passes, Herschel Walker scored twice and Maurice Carthon cracked the 1,000-yard rushing mark, leading the New Jersey Generals to a 27-7 rout of the Denver Gold before a crowd of 28,915.

The playoff-bound Generals improved to 13-4 while Denver(8-9) suffered its eighth loss in nine games and hurt its playoff chances. The Gold loss clinched the Pacific Division title for Los Angeles, but Denver is still battling Michigan and Arizona for two Western Conference wild card playoff spots. Denver finishes its season at home Friday against Oakland.

Carthon gained 68 yards to give him 1,007 on the season. He joins Walker (1,277) in becoming only the fourth pair of teammates in pro football history to gain over 1,000 yards in the same season. Tim Spencer and Kevin Long of the Blitz last accomplished the feat last year. In the NFL, Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris each gained 1,000 yards for Miami in 1972 and Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier turned the trick for Pittsburgh in 1976.

Sipe had scoring passes of four yards each to Clarence Collins and Walker and a 21-yarder to Sam Bowers. Walker added a 10-yard touchdown run to open the scoring 3:18 into the game.
