New Jersey 14 at Pittsburgh 10

1984 Week 9 - Sunday, April 22, 1984
New Jersey Generals(6-2)(-6) at Pittsburgh Maulers(2-6)
Attendance: 14,418, TV: ABC

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Herschel Walker had his best game of the season Sunday, rushing for 152 yards on 25 carries in the rain at Pittsburgh as the New Jersey Generals downed the Maulers 14-10 before only 14,418 fans.

New Jersey trailed 2-7 Pittsburgh 10-0 going into the fourth-quarter. But Walker went in from the 4 and Maurice Carthon's 16-yard scoring run with just over five minutes left won it. The Generals, 7-2, staged a last-minute goalline stand to preserve the victory.

"The weather was terrible," Walker said. "It was so wet. My shoes felt like they weighed 10 pounds apiece." The anticipated duel between Walker and Rozier, the last two Heisman Trophy winners, never materialized. Rozier left in the second quarter with a mild concussion after gaining 20 yards on five carries.
