DELAND (AP) - Rookie running back Alonzo Patterson scored on a 1-yard run to lead the New Jersey Generals to a 28-20 victory over the Philadelphia Stars in a United States Football League scrimmage Saturday.

The game was played under controlled rules with each team running six, 12-play offensive series.

New Jersey's defense shut down Philadelphia's running game, with Fred Gilbert chalking up three sacks out of the Generals' total of four.

Rookie running back Rod Pegues from Oklahoma scored two touchdowns and gained 76 yards for the Generals. Herschel Walker carried six times for 58 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown play.

Philadelphia's running game was led by Brian Thomas, who gained 45 yards on 14 carries. The Stars were limited to 58 yards on 24 attempts.

New Jersey quarterback Brian Sipe, who played for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League last season, completed 10 of 11 passes for 131 yards and was intercepted once.

Rookie quarterback Tim Riordan out of Temple completed eight of 13 passes for Philadelphia, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to receiver Tom Donovan.
